The serious student of Holy Scripture texts will find in the Aramaic
a treasure store of word meanings and relationships.
Jesus and the apostles spoke Aramaic. We can know the actual words
they used. "Abba" father, "tlmida" disciple (taught one), "bit jida"
Bethsaida (house of nets), etc.
Some of the Old Testament (part of Daniel and Ezra) were written in
Aramaic, also known as Chaldee. These texts are in the Hebrew script.
Aramaic is a "linguistic bridge" between the Old and New Testaments.
Many Hebrew roots have their counterparts in Aramaic. The alphabets of the
two dialects are identical.
The scriptures of the Eastern Church were the Peshitta, written in
Aramaic. Although no extant manuscripts date earlier than the fourth century,
there is evidence that their origin rivals the Greek. The overall lexical
content of the Aramaic and Greek New Testaments compare extremely well to
each other.
It is interesting to note that Aramaic phrases are quoted in the
Greek New Testament, but the Aramaic New Testament does not quote Greek
phrases. For example: "Maranatha", "talitha kumi" and "Eli, Eli lama
sabachthani" are Aramaic phrases quoted by the Greek N.T. The Aramaic N.T.
does use some Greek loan words.
When the text of the Hebrew or Greek scriptures is unclear, it is
helpful to refer to the Aramaic (also known as ancient Syriac).
The Aramaic vocabulary included in the Original Bible Reader is
complete for the New Testament. Lexicons may be consulted to expand on the
basic meanings given.
The Aramaic text is transliterated from the Peshitta New Testament.
Manuscripts exist in Estrangelo (the earliest), Nestorian and Jacobite scripts.
The Peshitta Old Testament, like the Greek Septuagint, has great worth
in textual criticism.
